Spend much time surfing the internet? Boy, you sure can find a lot of great photographers and photographs of breath taking landscapes and exotic places. It sure can make you envious, but while it is easy to want to travel the world trying to take those same great photos it’s important to remember that you have your own backyard. I’ll admit that I do spend a fair amount of time on the internet searching for photography sites and I have come across many great photographers with outstanding photos. Many of these get placed in my favorite bookmarks, but as I search through these sites one thing really surprises me. It’s the number of photographers from around the world who have traveled through my own backyard. For instance, if you check out Steve Gottlieb’s Abandoned America section on his website you will notice a structure that I have also photographed and it’s only 40 miles from my home. The beautiful thing about your backyard is you know more about...your backyard. Who else would know more about it? Most times I shoot pretty close to home as I consider my backyard to be about a 100-mile radius from where I live, although this may change with the price of gas :-) It makes it easy to plan a short trip and pick a good time to go or to go on a whim when conditions are going to be just right. Everyone has one particular subject they love to photograph. For some its portraits or still life, maybe flowers or automobiles, landscapes or even trains. Whatever you enjoy photographing there are always opportunities to capture these beautiful scenes in your own backyard. I happen to love photographing old abandoned structures. Many of these I have just happened across through my travels in my backyard and others I have discovered while talking to someone in passing. Whatever it is you love to photograph, always remember your backyard.
